Arkansas MPJE: what the jurisprudence exam covers and how to prepare
The MPJE — the Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination — is the pharmacy law exam candidates must pass for licensure. In Arkansas it is often simply called the jurisprudence exam, and it tests both the federal law that governs pharmacy practice and the Arkansas-specific statutes and Board rules layered on top of it.
Who takes the Arkansas MPJE
- Pharmacy students and recent graduates applying for an initial Arkansas license.
- Pharmacists reciprocating into Arkansas from another state.
- Out-of-state pharmacy students who plan to practice in Arkansas after graduation.
What the exam covers
The Arkansas portion draws heavily on the Arkansas State Board of Pharmacy Rules (Title 17, Part 160), organized across Subparts 1 through 32. Those rules govern licensure and registration, pharmacy operations and permits, prescription requirements and recordkeeping, compounding, technicians and interns, institutional and long-term care practice, and Arkansas controlled substance regulations. Federal law — the Controlled Substances Act, the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, HIPAA, and related requirements — supplies the baseline the state rules build on.
How to prepare
- Read the Board Rules by subpart rather than skimming a summary — the exam asks about specifics such as time limits, quantities, and who may perform which task.
- Translate each rule into practice: ask what it means at the counter, in the hospital, or in a long-term care setting.
- Pay particular attention to Arkansas controlled substance rules, where state requirements are stricter than federal ones.
- Self-test. Answering questions surfaces the gaps that re-reading hides.
